No, not the ones youāre thinking about! Data wipers. Ukraine is facing an onslaught of them. Itās an increasingly popular type of malware created to maliciously erase the hard drive of a computer it infects. Researchers at ESET discovered new data wiping malware targeting Ukrainian organizations ā SwiftSlicer. This isnāt the first time Ukraine is facing a wiper threat. Just a few weeks ago, Ukraine's national news agency Ukrinform was targeted by five different wing media. Ukraine's Computer Emergency Response Team was able to partially stop the wipers but it was a close call. If successful, the malware wouldāve rendered the news agencyās computer systems useless. Unsurprisingly, the attack on Ukrinform and the latest SwiftSlicer malware seem to be coming from Russia. Sandworm, the Russia-backed hacking group related to the attacks, is increasingly relying on wiper malware as its cyber weapon of choice. Wipers are specifically created to disrupt and degrade critical infrastructure. While this type of malware isnāt new, its popularity has increased significantly in the last few years. Especially since the beginning of Russiaās invasion of Ukraine. However, the country is striking back. In response to cyber threats during the invasion, Ukraine has formed an IT army with thousands of volunteers. So, what do you think? Will wiper malware become more of a threat in the coming years? šOUR SOCIAL MEDIA š± šµFACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/NordVPN/ šµINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/nordvpn/ šµTIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@nordvpn šµTWITTER: https://twitter.com/NordVPN Check out NordVPNās German and French channels āÆļø š š«š· @NordVPNenfrancais š©šŖ @NordVPNaufDeutsch *** #NordVPN #UkraineWar #SwiftSlicer
