For some high school athletes, getting the recognition needed to be able to play beyond high school can be difficult. Three-time NBA Champion and two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is no stranger to that feeling. When he graduated from high school in 2005, Curry was only a three-star prospect who hadn’t received any of the right opportunities to play on the level he believed he could. He didn’t let this stop him from playing basketball, though. Curry continued to play at Davidson College, where he won the attention of coaches and scouts. With hard work and dedication, Curry turned the doubters into believers.

As a result of his personal basketball journey, Curry wanted to create an environment where young athletes could learn the skills and advice and receive the encouragement they need to succeed. With the support of Rakuten, Steph Curry created the Underrated Tour, a seven-stop U.S. tour that gives high school basketball players the chance to become better players and demonstrate their potential. 

For Allyah Cartajena, this was the opportunity she had been searching for. Allyah was grateful to be able to play alongside female athletes just like her, representing unlimited potential yet lacking the attention they deserve. To participate in the Underrated Tour and make sure she made it back in time for her high school basketball game, Allyah flew to and from Phoenix, Arizona to Walnut, California in the same day.

To Allyah, Curry represents fearlessness because no matter what people said about him, he never gave up and kept pushing towards achieving his dream. The Underrated Tour Phoenix Spotlight: Allyah Cartajena | Rakuten

Young basketball players feel a different kind of pressure to get noticed and make it beyond their high school basketball careers. For Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, he knows this feeling all too well. As a high school basketball player, Curry was an underrated three-star prospect who was overlooked by the top collegiate basketball programs in the U.S.. However, he worked hard during his time at Davidson College to turn the doubters into believers. He demonstrated that he was indeed worthy of a chance in the big leagues, then went on to win three NBA Championships and two titles as the NBA MVP. 

The Underrated Tour was started by Stephen Curry and sponsored by Rakuten to give under-appreciated athletes like he once was the opportunity to showcase their talents to coaches and scouts nationwide. This tour was the right motivation for Matelina Ochea, who has been playing on her high school girls’ basketball team for the past four years. When she was close to scoring 1,000 points during her senior year, their basketball season was cancelled halfway through, robbing her of the chance to be recognized during her Senior Night. Matelina saw the Underrated Tour in Phoenix as encouragement to continue playing basketball and to take the next step and pursue college women’s basketball to get herself noticed.

For Matelina, Curry’s story hits close to home. He was once the basketball player who went unnoticed, and he became somebody he never thought he would be with dedication and a passion for the sport. These values and more are one of the biggest reasons why Rakuten is proud to partner with Curry on the Underrated Tour, to support young athletes like Matelina on their journey to success. When Curry was a basketball player in high school, he was only a three-star prospect who was underrated and under-appreciated. However, Curry didn’t let them stop him from playing the game he loved. 

The next few years proved to many non-believers that Curry was a force to be reckoned with. He played passionately to turn the doubters into believers, and he proved to everyone that he was worth the shot. As a result of his basketball journey, Curry started the Underrated Tour to give under-appreciated high school athletes the same opportunities to excel. The optimism that Curry has carried since high school shines brightly in the Underrated Tour.

Committed to giving young basketball players the chance to demonstrate their potential to coaches and scouts nationwide, the Underrated Tour is the opportunity of a lifetime for many young athletes. The tour kicked off in January 2019 and will journey across seven stops in the U.S., but the Phoenix stop is extra special for some eager prospects. Young, female athletes showcased their talents and redefined what it means to “play like a girl.”
