Welcome to The Lab! In this episode, James, a Blue Shirt and a bonified OLED expert, lays down the knowledge on OLED TVs. OLED is quantum physics in action. (The science behind it actually won the Nobel Prize—how cool is that?) But all you really need to know is, those eight million pixels turning on and off independently make an OLED picture extraordinary. Perfect color. Perfect contrast. Perfectly detailed images with no exaggeration or quality loss. In fact, the images are so real and so natural looking you could be peering out your window, instead of at a screen. Because OLED is a technology in itself, it’s available in a number of different brands of TVs: LG, Sony and Vizio. And because of the way OLED panels are made, and how thin they are, they’re low in hazardous substances, use minimal plastic in the manufacturing process and are recycling-efficient. Here’s what else is cool. OLED TVs are easy on the eyes, because the display panels emit very little blue light. (Which, as you may know, can damage cells in the retina with prolonged exposure.) The low blue light, in combination with the flicker-free picture, has earned OLED certification as an “Eye-Comfort Display” from TUV Rheinland, an independent testing service based in Germany.
